Sam Maloof-Style Low-Back Chair

Sam Maloof was one of the USA’s best-known cabinetmakers. His furniture, which is always made by hand - each piece unique - is displayed in many art and design museums. The hallmark of his pieces is the flowing lines, which are shaped by reworking the entire surface with rasps and grinders. He has developed a method of joining whereby the transitions from seat to legs on his chairs have no corners or edges, making his furniture very pleasing to the touch.
In the course, you will build a low-back chair using techniques developed by Sam Maloof. The design is also almost true to the original. The main focus of the course is making the chair with the so-called »Maloof joint« and freely shaping the surface, using rasps and carving tools.
  • Making the »Maloof joint«
  • Shaping the curved seat with angle grinder and Arbortech Turboplane
  • Three-dimensional marking with templates
  • Preparing the parts with a band saw
  • Creating the flowing lines
  • Freely shaping the surface
  • Correct use of angle grinder and rasps
