Wie wird Urushi-Lack hergestellt?

Urushi wird aus Sumach-Gewächsen der subtropischen Regionen gewonnen. Aus Qualitätsgründen werden jedoch von den über 200 verschiedenen Sumach-Gewächsen nur drei dieser Gewächse zur Gewinnung von Urushi eingesetzt. Hierfür wird der Baum alle vier bis fünf Tage angeritzt, sodass der Baum den Lacksaft abgibt. Im Durchschnitt werden aus 150 Bäumen, mit einem Durchmesser von 30 cm, täglich drei Liter Lacksaft geerntet. Dies entspricht einer Ernte von 20 ml pro Baum. Urushi-Lack kann nur von Mitte Juni bis Ende September geerntet werden. Dies macht diesen Lack zu einer Rarität. Sobald kein Lacksaft mehr geerntet werden kann, werden die Bäume klein gesägt, zehn Tage in Wasser eingeweicht und ausgekocht. Der durch Auskochen gewonnene Lack hat dann jedoch einen hohen Wassergehalt, weshalb man diesen nur für Grundierungen nutzen kann.

Welche Vorteile bietet Urushi-Lack?

Der Lack ist nicht umsonst so beliebt, bringt er doch einzigartige Eigenschaften mit sich. Urushi ist vollkommen alterungsbeständig und selbst heute noch werden alte Objekte mit Urushi-Beschichtung gefunden, die nahezu unversehrt sind und Jahrhunderte überlebt haben. Urushi-Oberflächen haben diese Widerstandsfähigkeit dank ihrer Beständigkeit gegenüber Wasser, Hitze, Alkohol, Säuren, Lauge und Lösungsmittel. Dadurch ist dieser Lack wirksamer als viele hoch entwickelte Möbellacke. Ausgetrockneter Urushi-Lack ist komplett Lebensmittel-echt und kann sorglos für Gegenstände wie Reis- und Teeschalen verwendet werden.

Welche Eigenschaften hat Urushi-Lack?

Der japanische Lack kann in beliebig vielen Schichten aufgetragen werden. Der Lack haftet auf vielen Oberflächen wie z.B. Holz, Ton, Stoff, Papier und Metall. Dies macht Urushi-Lack perfekt für Kunsthandwerk-Liebhaber. Urushi ermöglicht einen schönen tiefen Glanz und kann farbig deckende und transparente Flächen erzeugen. Auch ein tiefes Schwarz kann durch die Lackarbeit erzeugt werden. Auf Grund der hohen Beständigkeit von Urushi könnte man denken, dass die Lackschicht hart sei. Das Gegenteil ist der Fall. Die Schichten sind dauerhaft elastisch und neigen deshalb auf den Lackwaren nicht zu Rissbildung.

Wofür wird Urushi-Lack verwendet?

Früher wurde Lack als Schutzanstrich und Dekomaterial für verschiedenste Objekte verwendet. Selbst Maschinenteile und ganze Tempelanlagen wurden damit beschichtet. Seit der Erfindung von Kunstharzen beschränkt sich die Verwendung heute auf Lackkunst wie hochwertige Möbel, Schalen, Dosen und Schmuck.

Warum sind Urushi-Lackwaren so wertvoll?

Da Urushi nur in geringen Mengen hergestellt werden kann und die für die Herstellung geschulte Fachleute einen schwierigen und zeitaufwendigen Prozess durchlaufen müssen, sind Urushi beschichtete Gegenstände sehr wertvoll. Diese Lackwaren kommen meist aus China oder Japan, wobei die aus japanischen zirka 10-mal teurer sind. Trotz zahlreicher Versuche ist es bisher noch nicht gelungen, Urushi künstlich herzustellen. Selbst beim Auftragen kommt man nicht um eine aufwendige Lackierung.

Worauf muss man beim Arbeiten mit Urushi achten?

WICHTIG: Urushi kann im flüssigen Zustand zu Haut- und Schleimhautreizungen führen und bei manchen Leuten zu allergischen Reaktionen bis hin zu starker Bildung von Wasserbläschen auf der Haut führen. Deswegen ist es wichtig, beim Aushärten und der Verarbeitung, entsprechende Schutzausrüstung zu tragen. Am besten hierfür geeignet sind lösemittelbeständige Handschuhe. Im trockenen Zustand sind die lackierten Gegenstände völlig ungefährlich – und sogar Lebensmittel-echt.
