During the course of the 19th century the wind instrument making industry in the Upper Vogtland region of Germany developed into a highly diversified and vital part of the local economy. A large range of wooden and metal wind instruments were produced to satisfy the demands of the local and national instrument markets. The wind instrument workshops understandably flourished in Markneukirchen, a traditional center of violin, guitar, bow and string making crafts in Germany. Enrico Weller focuses of providing information on the instrument makers living in this area and their workshops, rather than on the specifics of the individual instruments they created. He shows how the region’s special economic features, the specific historical setting and exceptional individual craftsmen led to numerous innovations which significantly influenced the course of wind instrument making.
