Towards the end of the 17th century, Austria’s Cembalo making traditions began to diverge significantly from those found in the rest of the German speaking lands. The first part of this book addresses the early history of the Cembalo, with a special focus on the developments which took place in the regions under Austrian control. The second part takes a closer look at a few of the Austrian Cembalos which have survived to this day, special attention is given to the typical stylistic elements, the construction methods, the keyboard, the strings and the tuning, allowing the reader to reliably classify unlabeled instruments. The book is concluded by a listing of all the Austrian Cembalo makers and a short description of 17 well-preserved Austrian Cembalos.
