Birch Bark Boxes

These boxes of untreated birch bark are completely hand-made in Siberia according to a traditional model. They are ideal for keeping dry foods, spices and tea. A special plugging technique allows them to be made without metal nails and almost without glue. Bottom and lid are made of solid pinewood.

Birch Bark

Birch bark is breathable, retains aromas and protects its contents from mould by way of essential oils. The raw material retains its shape and elasticity for decades. The bark is taken from Siberian birches which are felled for making furniture. The actual material used for the boxes is the inner layer of the bark, which is peeled off the outer layer after the bark has been stored in water. To produce thicker materials, several layers are joined together.
